A Brief History of Surf Lifesaving
Surf lifesaving began in the early 20th century as coastal communities recognized the ocean’s dangers. The first recognized surf lifesaving club is often credited to Bondi Beach, Australia (circa 1906/1907). Over time, the movement grew globally, with South Africa among the nations developing volunteer lifeguard and beach safety programs.
Through the decades, lifesaving evolved—from rudimentary rescue tools (like reels and belts) to modern rescue boards, inflatable rescue boats, and advanced medical training. The mission remained constant: to reduce drowning, protect beachgoers, and cultivate a community of vigilant, capable lifesavers.
Since its founding in 2011, Marlin Surf has carried this tradition forward—training youth, patrolling beaches, and embedding surf safety within our local culture.
